Chennai Rains: Temperatures are expected to hover between 30 and 39 degrees Celsius on June 1-2 accompanied by a generally cloudy sky with light rain anticipated. June 3 is also expected to see similar conditions with temperatures between 29 and 39 degrees Celsius. The trend continues into June 4-5 with the onset of rain, with temperatures ranging from 29 to 38 degrees Celsius. Throughout the week, varying degrees of cloud cover and precipitation are expected in Chennai, making it advisable to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts.
Meanwhile, day temperatures in Chennai on Thursday breached 40 degrees Celsius. Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam observatories recorded highs of 40.1 degrees Celsius and 41.9 degrees Celsius, respectively, marking deviations of 2.2 degrees Celsius and 3.3 degrees Celsius above normal levels.
According to meteorologists, the intense heat is due to strong north-north westerly winds, characterised by their hot and dry nature, coupled with a weak sea breeze.

N. Senthamarai Kannan, director of the regional weather forecasting centre at IMD, explains that the region is experiencing winds originating from the Rayalaseema area. With a weak seabreeze, heat becomes trapped over the land, affecting Chennai and nearby districts. This weather pattern is expected to persist for the next two days.
Notably, the hot weather has led to the city’s power demand to peak again after a break due to the summer rain, and the daily electricity consumption recorded an all-time high of 97.53 million units (mu) on Wednesday.
Previously, 97.43 mu was the highest power consumption in the city which was recorded on May 3. With 4,530 megawatts (MW), the peak power demand of the city is trailing behind the maximum ever recorded at 4,590 MW on May 6.
