Chennai Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Tamil Nadu, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and rain in several districts. As per the latest update, many regions across the state are expected to experience adverse weather conditions, including gusty winds and lightning strikes.
Districts such as Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Theni, Madurai, Dindigul, and Coimbatore are on high alert for June 3. The alert comes in the wake of a cyclonic circulation forming over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the South Andaman Sea.
The current weather pattern is attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea. This system is bringing unstable conditions to southern India, especially Tamil Nadu.

Recently, isolated rainfall was observed across parts of Tamil Nadu, while Puducherry received very light rain. The Karaikal region remained dry. Despite the showers, temperatures in Tamil Nadu have stayed above average, with some places recording maximums 2–3 degrees C higher than usual.
Madurai Airport registered the highest temperature at 39.4 degrees C, whereas Dharmapuri and Karur Paramathi noted the lowest minimum temperature of 23.0 degrees C among the plains.

Weather Forecast for Tamil Nadu: Yellow Alert Issued for June 3-4
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds over several parts of Tamil Nadu. These conditions are expected in the following districts:
- June 3, 2025 – Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Theni, Madurai, Dindigul, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Kallakurichi, and Vellore.
- June 4, 2025 – A fresh yellow alert has been issued for light to moderate rain, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls in the following districts:
Tenkasi, Theni, Dindigul, Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Vellore.
Residents in these areas should be prepared for sudden spells of rain, thunder and lightning, and gusty winds, which may cause localized waterlogging, traffic delays, and power disruptions.
