Chillai Kalan In Kashmir: The 40-day 'Chillai Kalan', which is known as the harshest period of winter in Kashmir, started on Saturday with severe cold. Amidst the dry weather in Srinagar, the minimum temperature which remained below zero continuously touched minus 8.5 degrees Celsius on Friday night. This is 6.2 degrees Celsius below normal. This is the first coldest night in December in Srinagar in the last 50 years and the third coldest night in the last 133 years, jagran.com reported.

Chillai Kalan In Kashmir: Lowest Temperature Recorded In This Year

If we look at the temperature recorded by the India Meteorological Department since 1891, the lowest ever minimum temperature in Srinagar was recorded at minus 12.8 degrees on December 13, 1934 and at minus 10.3 degrees in 1974.

Jammu Weather

In Jammu division, the minimum temperature in Udhampur, Rajouri and Bhaderwah went below zero. There is some relief in Jammu city during the day, but the cold has increased in the morning and night. The minimum temperature in Jammu was recorded at 5.4 degrees.

According to the Meteorological Department, it will be mostly cloudy on Sunday. Snowfall will start in the upper hilly areas from late night, which will continue till Monday morning. In other parts of Kashmir too, the minimum temperature is seen setting new records.

Coldest Area In Konibal Valley

Konibal, located on the outskirts of Pampore town, was the coldest area in the valley with a minimum temperature of 10.5 degrees Celsius. Kupwara recorded the lowest minimum temperature of minus 7.2 degrees Celsius since 1998. Earlier, the minimum temperature was recorded at 9.4 degrees Celsius on December 31, 1998.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in Jammu was 21.1 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was minus 12.8 degrees in 1934 and minus 10.3 degrees in 1974.

In Jammu division, Udhampur, Rajouri and Bhaderwah also recorded minimum temperatures below zero. Clouds shall prevail today and there is a possibility of snowfall on the upper mountains of Jammu and Kashmir from late night.

Winter Holidays Jammu Division Schools From December 26

Winter holidays have been declared in all government and private schools under the summer zone in Jammu division. According to the order issued by Jammu Education Director Ashok Kumar Sharma, holidays in schools will be from December 26 to January 4, 2025. If the service of the staff is required, the department can call them.

Possibility Of Snowfall In Upper Mountains On December 31

According to Meteorological Centre Srinagar, the weather will remain dry from December 23 to 26. There are chances of rain in the plains of Jammu on December 27 and 28. There may be light snowfall in the high hill areas of Chenab Valley and Pir Panchal Range. The weather will remain dry on December 29 and 30. There is a possibility of snowfall in some upper hill areas on December 31.
