Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday voiced support for Allahabad High Court Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav following the judge’s controversial remarks advocating a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and comments against minorities at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) event. Speaking at the World Hindu Economic Forum 2024, CM Yogi Adityanath criticised the Opposition for moving an impeachment notice against Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav, alleging attempts to suppress truth and Constitutional values.

CM Yogi Adityanath accused the Congress of double standards, stating, "Whoever speaks the truth, they pressurize with impeachment motions and yet claim to uphold the Constitution." He defended Justice Yadav's remarks, stating that globally, majority sentiments shape systems and called for ending discrimination between majority and minority communities in India.

"Shouldn't there be a Uniform Civil Code in the country? The world over, the system runs as per what the majority community says and India is saying the discrimination between majority and minority community should end," CM Adityanath said as quoted by news agency PTI.

The impeachment notice against Justice Yadav was submitted by several Opposition members in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, citing his remarks at the December 8 VHP event. The Supreme Court has since sought details from the Allahabad High Court regarding the controversy.

Turning to another impeachment motion, CM Adityanath criticised the Opposition’s notice against Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar for alleged partisanship. He attributed their actions to resentment over a farmer's son achieving high office. "If someone speaks the truth as a judge or citizen, they are threatened with impeachment," CM Adityanath said.

The chief minister also called for exposing those undermining India’s legacy and accused the Opposition of denying cultural heritage, including Ram's existence. Contrasting historical narratives, he lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for honouring workers building the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, while condemning past rulers for mistreating labourers.

"You have PM Modi showering flowers on workers who built the Ram Temple in Ayodhya for their hard work, and there will also be rulers who chopped the hands of workers who built the Taj Mahal," he said.

Highlighting economic achievements, he noted India’s rise from the 10th to the 5th largest economy under PM Modi’s leadership, with projections to become the third largest by 2027. He added that Uttar Pradesh, now the country’s second-largest economy, is advancing toward a USD 1 trillion economy.
