Cyclone Ditwah Update: Coastal Tamil Nadu is reeling under heavy rainfall as Cyclone Ditwah lashes the region. The state’s delta districts, including Ramanathapuram and Nagapattinam, have been severely affected. In response to the impending disaster, the Tamil Nadu Government on Saturday, November 9, advised residents to stockpile essential supplies as the cyclone continues its northeastward journey over the Bay of Bengal toward the state.

With extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds expected over the next 48 hours, officials have emphasised the need for early preparedness across vulnerable districts. Residents have been advised to keep adequate supplies of drinking water, milk, vegetables, medicines, candles, batteries, and other necessities at home.

Cyclone Ditwah: Latest Updates

- Cyclone Ditwah is currently moving northwards with a speed of 10 kmph over the past 6 hours and currently lies 290 km south of Chennai.

- The cyclone is expected to come within 25 km of the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline by tomorrow, November 30 evening.

- Indian Air Force is set to begin evacuation flights from tomorrow, Sunday, November 30 to bring stranded Indian passengers back home from Bandaranaike Airport, Colombo.

- About 28 disaster response teams, including SDRF and NDRF, are currently on standby. The government is planning to airlift 10 more teams from other states.

- An official said 14 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have already been deployed in vulnerable districts, including Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, and Mayiladuthurai.

- As many as 6,000 relief camps have been established in these parts of the state.

- Indian air carriers like Air India have issued travel advisories to passengers for possible disruptions to travel plans. In a post on X, Air India stated, "Heavy rain and strong winds resulting from Cyclone Ditwah may impact our flights operating to and from Chennai and some other cities in southern India.

- Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The weather department has predicted extremely heavy rain at isolated spots like Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Villuppuram, Chengalpattu districts, and the Puducherry-Karaikal region.
