Cyclone Fengal, a slow-moving weather system in the Bay of Bengal, is expected to make landfall at the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry today, November 30, in the evening, reported the Indian Meteorological Department. Schools and colleges have been shut and fishermen asked to stay home as the cyclone is projected to cross close to Puducherry and Chennai, news agency IANS reported.

The cyclone brought high-speed winds and heavy rains in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villuppuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore districts, and Puducherry. The weather body also sounded a red alert for November 30 for these areas. Amid the rough sea, high rainfall and turbulent conditions, the state agencies remained on high alert, ANI reported.

15:35 - Heavy rain and strong winds hit Marakanam, Viluppuram as CycloneFengal approaches.

13:25 - Multiple flights are expected to be affected by Cyclone Fengal, multiple fliers reported on X. 

"Flights to and from Chennai are getting affected due to inclement weather and heavy rains. Please check your flight status before heading to the airport," Air India wrote.

12:15 - The deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal intensified into Cyclonic Storm FENGAL yesterday. As of GdnPYd2XAAAxa_58:30 AM today (November 30), it was located about 120 km east-northeast of Puducherry, 110 km southeast of Chennai, and 200 km north-northeast of Nagappattinam

12:14 - Fengal is moving westward at 13 kmph and is expected to make landfall this evening between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, near Puducherry. Wind speeds are likely to reach 70-80 kmph, with gusts up to 90 kmph.  

10:55 - IMD Update - "Cyclonic Storm “FENGAL” over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of today, the 30th November 2024 over the same region near latitude 12.2°N and longitude 81.2°E, about 150 km east of Puducherry, 140 km southeast of Chennai, 210 km northeast of Nagappattinam and 400 km north of Trincomalee. To move nearly westwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during evening of 30th November."

10:35 - Authorities in Tamil Nadu have been directed to suspend public transport services on key roads like East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) during the afternoon of November 30.

10:30 - The authorities have asked the public not to visit beaches in the metropolis, including Marina Beach, Pattinapakkam and Edward Elliot Beach, ANI reported.

10:25 - The cyclone will hit the coastal areas of north Tamil Nadu today evening and a red alert was issued by IMD yesterday for various parts of southern states including the south Andhra Pradesh coastal areas.
