Data Protection Bill, 2023, was introduced in parliament on Thursday. It includes the provision of a penalty upto Rs 250 crore for every data breach. Ashwini Vaishnaw, minister for electronics and information technology, introduced the Bill in the Lok Sabha on Thursday in order to prevent data misuse and exploitation.

The bill gives the government specific exemptions for the purposes of investigating or determining the financial information, assets, and liabilities of any individual who has defaulted in payment due on account of a loan or advance obtained from a financial institution.

The bill that allows for data processing without user consent under certain circumstances, such as medical emergencies, disasters, court orders, and government agency requirements, has been introduced six years after Supreme Court declared the Right to Privacy a Fundamental Right.

The schedule allows for a maximum fine of Rs 250 crore and a minimum fine of Rs 50 crore to be imposed on organisations that violate the rules.

The Bill's provisions allow the Centre to block access to content in the public's interest on receiving a written reference from the board.The law also establishes the strict accountability of the government or private companies.

After the introduction of The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023 in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that this Bill is a very significant milestone in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision which will protect the rights of all citizens.

Taking to X, Chandrasekhar said that "DPDPBill introduced in #Parliament is a very significant milestone in PM @narendramodi ji's vision of Global Standard Cyber Laws for India's USD 1T #DigitalEconomy and #IndiaTechade." "@GoI_MeitY has developed this bill after extensive consultations which I personally led - with all stakeholders including #DigitalNagriks," he wrote on X.

He further explained that "This new Bill after it is passed by Parliament, will protect the rights of ALL citizens, allow the innovation economy to expand and permit Govt's lawful n legitimate access in national security and emergencies like pandemics and earthquakes etc."

According to the sources cited by the news agency ANI, the discussion on the bill will be held on August 7.
