Delhi Air Pollution:  Hopes of relief from pollution in Delhi and surrounding NCR areas were once again dashed as the national capital recorded an AQI of 307 'very poor' category at 8 pm on Monday.

Following 24 days of 'very poor' air, often edging towards the 'severe' zone, Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) improved to ‘poor' on Sunday with a reading of 279.

The CPCB classifies an AQI between 0 and 50 as 'good', 51 and 100 as 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 as 'moderate', 201 and 300 as 'poor', 301 and 400 as 'very poor', and 401 and 500 as 'severe'.

According to the CPCB 's SAMEER app, this was the second-lowest reading for the month of November after November 5. On Sunday, 22 of the city's 39 monitoring stations still showed the "very poor" category.

On Monday, transport emissions accounted for 20 per cent of Delhi's pollution, according to the Decision Support System of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune. On Tuesday, it is projected to contribute 19.8 per cent.

What led to AQI rise?

On Sunday, strong winds pushed Delhi's average AQI to 279, after 16 days of being in the 'very poor' category.

On Monday, the wind weakened, and the pollution increased again. Experts say that the thick smog layer could become even thicker over the next two to three days due to low wind speeds and falling temperatures.
