The prestigious Gymkhana Club in Lutyens' Delhi has written a letter to the Land and Development Office (LDO) after the central government ordered the club to hand over its premises by June 5. The club has raised four concerns including whether an "appropriately located alternate plot of land" will be given to it.
In its May 22 eviction order, the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry stated that the 27.3-acre plot is required for strengthening and securing defence infrastructure and other important works related to public safety.
Details Of Delhi Gymkhana Club’s Letter To Centre
"The GC (the General Committee that runs the club) requests that you consider that there should be no dislocation of the club and its operations until there is clarity about some of the following issues," the letter read.
-The communication also sought clarity from the government on whether the LDO or the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs was exploring the possibility of allotting an alternative site for the club’s relocation. Is the government "considering the allocation of some other appropriately located alternate plot of land for the club to relocate? The GC would request that LDO kindly consider this," it said.
-The letter further urged the authorities to take into account the substantial financial investments made by the club over the years in upgrading and developing its infrastructure and member facilities before arriving at any decision regarding the land parcel.
-It emphasised that shifting the club to a new location would require the reconstruction of facilities and infrastructure, resulting in significant cost.
-It also highlighted concerns surrounding the livelihoods and security of the club’s permanent employees as well as other staff members, alongside safeguarding the interests of its members.

'Highly Sensitive And Strategic Area Of Delhi': Govt
The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry cited that the premises, located at 2, Safdarjung Road, is a highly sensitive and strategic area of Delhi, the government has decided to terminate the lease and repossess the land with immediate effect.
About Delhi Gymkhana Club
The Delhi Gymkhana Club stands adjacent to the Prime Minister's residence on Lok Kalyan Marg. The area is considered a high-security zone as it houses several key central government and defence establishments.
The club was founded during the British era. It began functioning at the site as the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club in 1913. It was renamed the Delhi Gymkhana Club after India got Independence. Its current structures were constructed in the 1930s.
