The issue of hoisting flag on Independence Day has become another bone of contention between Delhi government and Lieutenant Governor. The Delhi government's General Administration Department (GAD) on Tuesday rejected Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's proposal, who sought Atishi should hoist the flag at the event at Chhatrasal Stadium instead of him.

Responding to senior AAP leader Gopal Rai, GAD said directive by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to authorise Atishi to hoist the national flag on August 15 was legally invalid, hence cannot be acted upon. The department also mentioned that it was unacceptable for Kejriwal to write a letter from Tihar Jail and engage in such communication, as it violates the rules.

Earlier, the BJP accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of trying to make the Independence Day celebrations controversial. Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva said that a few days ago, AAP leaders spread the misconception that Delhi government minister Atishi would hoist the flag at the state-level government ceremony this time.

For this, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has written a letter to the Lieutenant Governor. He said a letter from the Tihar Jail Superintendent, which categorically says CM cannot issue any official directive or request letter from the jail, has exposed the lies of AAP leaders.
