In an official order on Thursday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) announced yet another extension of the geotagging deadline of properties, which is now set for March 31. According to a report by The Indian Express citing official sources, the decision was made because only 2.5 lakh of the 15 lakh taxable residential properties in the city have been geotagged, which is substantially less than the compliance rate.

Initially, the geo-tagging of 15 lakh homes in Delhi was aimed to complete by January 31, but it was extended to February 29.

The assessment and collection department of the MCD has now discovered that a significant portion of taxpayers have not yet geotagged their properties. “In order to give an opportunity to taxpayers to geo-tag their properties, it has been decided to extend the last date of geo-tagging of properties by taxpayers till March 31, 2024,” read the order.

Digitally mapping a property using a geographic information system is known as geo-tagging (GIS). This means that a property's distinct, permanent latitude and longitude coordinates can be used to identify it on a map. According to MCD officials, residents as well as the corporation will gain from the capital's property geotagging initiative in several ways.

The capability of geo-tagging to identify unauthorised and unlawful properties and colonies is another benefit. Urban planning will benefit from this since it will enable the civic body to take necessary corrective action. Initially, MCD officials were visiting commercial properties to geotag 4 lakh non-residential properties as part of their mission to geotag the civic body.
