In a major step to decongest South Delhi's key route towards Gurugram and Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, the Public Works Department (PWD) has initiated the process for a feasibility study to construct a flyover on Sant Shri Baba Nagpalji (SSN) Marg in Chhatarpur, officials said on Friday.

The flyover will decongest the three-kilometre stretch of SSN Marg between the Anuvrat Marg intersection and DLF farms is mostly used by commuters travelling to Gurugram, Delhi airport, Vasant Kunj and other parts of South Delhi.

The traffic woes worsen during the peak hours in the morning and the evening when a large number of commuters are out for their offices and homes, respectively and travel between the two cities.

"The stretch is heavily congested due to a mix of slow-moving vehicles and cross movements during peak and non-peak hours. A tender has been floated inviting companies to carry out a detailed feasibility study," a PWD official said.

At present, there are three traffic signals along the Anuvrat Marg, approximately 200 metres ahead of the Chhatarpur Mandir intersection.

Integrated transit corridor planned

The PWD is planning to construct an integrated transit corridor to decongest the entire area. The corridor will include the construction of a flyover, slip roads, and an underpass or foot overbridge to facilitate pedestrian movement.

The move came after PWD Minister Parvesh Verma visited the Chhatarpur assembly constituency on the request of area MLA Kartar Singh Tanwar in June this year. During his visit, he directed the PWD officials to come up with a plan to decongest the areas.

"The road width varies from 27 to 30 metres, due to encroachments on the road and there are several commercial establishments. So there are a few challenges, which will be cleared after the study," the official added.

It is worth mentioning that the three-km stretch is surrounded by busy commercial areas. The constant movement of buses, cars, autos, two-wheelers, and pedestrians, this key South Delhi road stretch has turned into a traffic nightmare even during non-peak hours.

Feasibility report in six months

As per the tender, the detailed feasibility study will include a survey of the area and mapping of all buildings, details on encroachments, number of trees, signage, road features and other permanent structures in the project area.

The feasibility report will be submitted in six months, after which the construction work will likely start.

"The study also involves a cost-benefit analysis by taking into account the economic, environmental and social costs in implementing the project. Since there is a metro line near the stretch, moving parallel to the road, the PWD will further study how to integrate the transit corridor with the metro line to avoid any structural conflict," the project plan reads.
