The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Wednesday made its fifth arrest in connection with the Delhi Red Fort car blast case, which took place on Monday, November 10, claiming 13 lives and leaving several others injured. The accused, Dr Mohammad Arif, a DM cardiology student at the L.P.S. Institute of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery and Cardiac Medicine in Kanpur, was taken into custody for his suspected links to the Faridabad terror module.

According to officials, Arif’s name emerged during the analysis of phone records of Dr. Shaheen Saeed, a Lucknow-based doctor arrested on November 9 in the same case. Investigators revealed that the two had been in regular contact for several months.

Dr Arif was picked up from his rented flat in Kanpur’s Ashok Nagar area by the agency on November 12. He shared the room with Dr. Abhishek from the same college, who said that they were not friends and that he had never heard the names of Dr. Shaheen or Dr. Parwez from him.

Dr Abhishek, flatmate of Dr Arif said, "We were not friends. Initially, when we come here, we do not get hostels, so the resident doctors usually rent a flat. I never heard the names of Dr Shaheen or Dr Parwez from him. There was no change in his behaviour (after the blast). I got that flat from a broker. I had no idea about anything. He used to stay absolutely normal in the room. He used to come to work, then go back to the room. We used to meet as colleagues. I met him after he joined the cardiology department. We were not getting rooms, so we decided to share a flat."

Dr Arif, originally from Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, was apprehended from Kanpur based on leads provided by another accused, Dr Parvez. Following the arrest, a joint team of the NIA and ATS took both Dr Arif and Dr Parvez to Delhi late Wednesday night for further interrogation and investigation.

Arif's landlord, Kanhaiya Lal, said, "He stayed here for less than a month. No one used to meet him. Two boys used to stay here- Abhishek and Arif. Abhishek brought Arif and said that he is my partner and a doctor in the cardiology department. A team of four people came here and started to open the lock of Arif's room. My son asked who they were. They said we have come to take his belongings. My son allowed them to open the door after having a conversation with Arif. There was nothing suspicious about Arif's activities."

Reacting to the questioning of a student from the college, Dr A.K. Sharma, Professor at L.P.S. Institute of Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery, Kanpur, clarified that Mohammad Arif Mir, who is being probed in connection with the Delhi terror blast case, had joined the institute in August 2025 as a senior resident in the DM Cardiology postgraduate superspecialty course.

“Every year, students from across the country come here for three years of training in various disciplines. Arif’s father’s name, as per our records, is Ghulam Hasan Mir, and his permanent address is in Jammu & Kashmir,” Dr Sharma said. He added that Arif was living on rent in Ashok Nagar near Fatima School, as hostel accommodation was not available initially, a common situation for new students. “His conduct was good, and we never observed any suspicious behavior. It has only been four months since he joined, so it’s difficult to make a full assessment in such a short period. He was regular in his duties, with no record of prolonged absence. In fact, he completed his work yesterday morning and left after his evening duty as usual,” the professor noted.
