Delhi Traffic Issue: The chronic traffic menace in Delhi is one of the biggest issues in the national capital. During the recently concluded Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) promised to address the issue. Since, the saffron party came to power, now, people have turned their heads towards the government. The media reports stated that the Rekha Gupta-led Delhi government has begun working on drafting plans to alleviate traffic congestion.

The Economic Times's report stated that Delhi Chief Secretary, Dharmendra, recently held a meeting with various agencies and discussed workable solutions for easing traffic congestion on major roads.

Road safety committee formed

The authorities formed a road safety committee to conduct thorough surveys and analyze Delhi's traffic menace. The committee will take inputs from the traffic experts.

A pilot decongestion project is expected to be launched soon on Delhi's

A crucial element of this plan will be a pilot decongestion project on the Dhaula Kuan to Gurgaon border stretch road. The Delhi-Gurugram connecting road is identified as one of the city’s most congested paths. The Dhaula Kuan-Gurgaon is infamous for its multiple choking points, which cause massive traffic during working days. The decision to take the pilot project on this road is seen as a follow-up after Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari promised during the election campaign, where he that the city would be traffic congestion-free.

After taking oath as a member of NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council) on Tuesday, Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Verma said an encroachment drive would be carried out to ensure clean and traffic-free roads.

Senior PWD officials to adopt roads for maintenance

In another development, senior officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) were asked to take responsibility for overseeing and ensuring the maintenance of different roads in the city. They were asked to adopt a road of their choice to address the poor condition of roads in the capital. Also, it was decided that all senior officials of the PWD would be assigned the responsibility of maintaining at least one road under the department's jurisdiction.

Delhi CM Gupta inspected a school in Shalimar Bagh Assembly constituency and assessed the condition of roads a day after taking the oath for the top office of the city. She instructed the officials to solve all the issues related to roads, which showed that solving traffic is one of her priorities.

Meanwhile, the BJP had pledged to launch a massive drive to resolve traffic issues. The saffron party had promised to build new flyovers, tunnel roads, and bypasses. The BJP government will focus on 117 major congestion points, including hotspots like Outer Ring Road, MG Road, MB Road, and Ashram Chowk.
