The national capital Delhi continues to reel under acute cold and dense fog with zero visibility in many areas. However the IMD, days back, predicted that the area might get respite from a severe cold wave due to the segregation of the thick layer of fog shrouding the atmosphere, preventing sunlight from reaching the earth's surface.
Due to bad weather conditions at Delhi Airport seven flights were diverted to Jaipur and one flight was diverted to Mumbai, ANI reported while citing airport sources.
Besides the severe cold, the pollution in several areas of the national capital has reached the severe category with AQI surpassing the 400 mark. As per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI in the Anand Vihar area was recorded at 478, in JLN at 465, in IGI Airport (T3) at 465, in ITO Delhi at 455.
The city saw the season's first cold wave day, which meteorologically is defined as the minimum temperature dipping below 4 degrees Celsius, on Friday. The weather station in Delhi’s Safdarjung recorded the minimum temperature at 3.9 degrees Celsius against 5.8 degrees on Thursday.
The rampant fog has led to zero visibility on the highways and expressways, with the weather department issuing warnings in several areas of north India. “Very dense fog layer extends over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh (INSAT 3DR 0230 hrs IST Image). Passengers on highways need to drive extremely carefully and only with fog lights,” IMD posted on X (formerly Twitter).
“Journeys need to be halted until fog reduction by morning especially on expressways. Very Dense fog reporting over Amritsar, Chandigarh, Patiala, Ambala, Ganganagar, Palam, Safdarjung, Lucknow with visibility 0 meter since 0230 hrs IST of today,” the weather department added.
