Delhi-Meerut Expressway Update: Delhi-Meerut Expressway Update: Work on the fifth phase of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway remains incomplete despite a delay of nearly two years. Construction has been stalled since December last year due to protests by local villagers, and there is still no clear timeline for when work will resume. Even if the villagers’ demands are resolved and construction restarts this month, officials estimate it will take another seven to eight months to finish the project, jagran.com reported. The main hurdle is the incomplete construction of the two major entry and exit interchanges, which are crucial for making the stretch fully operational.
The 14-kilometre expressway was scheduled to be completed by March 2024. When the work failed to reach completion, the target was changed several times. A new target was set for March 2026, which was again not met. If work continues at a rapid pace, it could be completed by October. This four-lane expressway will connect near the Lohianagar dumping ground on the Hapur Highway to the fourth phase of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (Dasna-Partapur section) at Zainuddinpur.
An interchange is to be built near the Lohianagar dumping ground, or Shakarpur. The structure is not yet ready. The second interchange is to be built in Zainuddinpur. It will connect to the fourth phase of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. The underpass for this interchange is complete, and girders have been placed on the bridge.
Farmers had protested for almost a year demanding that a bridge be built near Churiyala on Mohiuddinpur-Kharkhauda road and that the ups and downs be provided. Due to this the construction work was halted at that place. The demand was accepted and then pillars were built. Even after the pillars were built, the delay continued. Investigation revealed that girders have been placed for this purpose but RE walls have not been built on both sides and the soil has not been filled.
What Are The Farmers' Main Demands?
-The interchange under construction in Talhata-Jainuddinpur village should be upgraded and ramps should be built for the surrounding villages, similar to the one being built on the Kharkhauda-Mohiuddinpur road in Churiyala.
-All farmers should be given equal compensation.
-Service roads should be built to access their farms.
-The farmers from whose fields the soil has been taken should be paid for it.
75 per cent of the work has been completed.
"Efforts are underway to find a solution with the help of the district administration. It is hoped that talks with the villagers will lead to a quick solution, after which work can begin. 75 percent of the work has been completed, so it will be completed by June,” said Arvind Kumar, Project Director, Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
