The format of the OPD card issued to patients at RML Hospital, New Delhi has been updated, making it easier for patients to take their prescribed medicines correctly. Additionally, the OPD registration process has become significantly faster. Previously, issuing an OPD card took around 20 seconds, but now it is ready in just three seconds. As a result, patients no longer have to wait in long queues for OPD registration.
Dr Samik Bhattacharya, in charge of the hospital's IT division, stated that the OPD card will now follow a color-coded system. Patients visiting the general OPD will receive a blue slip, while those heading to the emergency department will get a pink slip. This distinction will help staff quickly identify whether a patient belongs to the general OPD or emergency.

Furthermore, dedicated sections have been assigned on the OPD card for diagnosis, investigations, and prescribed medicines. To simplify medication instructions, the frequency of doses per day is preprinted on the card. Doctors only need to write the medicine’s name next to the relevant frequency and circle the number of times it should be taken. This ensures clarity for patients and minimises the chances of medication errors.
The improved efficiency is due to a switch in printing technology. Previously, printing an OPD card took 20 seconds, but with the introduction of slip printers, the process now takes just three seconds. The new system prints a slip containing the patient’s name, age, address, and identification number, which is then affixed to the OPD card.
