Bengaluru News: Leaving India is a goal for a Bengaluru businessman, who has paid nearly 4 crore rupees in GST and other taxes over 12 to 18 months. Sharing his business experience and understanding of India’s taxation and compliance framework, Rohit Shroff, founder of the Aflog Group, said the system pressurises most law-abiding businesses.

In a post shared on LinkedIn last week, Shroff questioned why businesses that follow the rules and pay taxes honestly are still treated with suspicion.

“In the last 12–18 months, across my businesses, in GST and income tax, I’ve paid over Rs 4 crore to a country that looks at its most compliant contributors with suspicion by default," he wrote.

Shroff highlighted that less than 5 per cent of Indians pay direct income taxes, still they face repeated scrutiny and all the notices, audits and clarifications are directed at them.

Shroff Calls System Exhausting And Complicated

According to Shroff, companies get nothing in return for following the rules. He said resisting the system is often more expensive and time-consuming than simply answering notices and letting it go. That’s why many entrepreneurs just comply silently, even though the process is complicated and exhausting.

Shroff asked what the point is of a system that gives no appreciation or incentive for doing the right thing. In his view, the setup is meant to satisfy the masses, not the small group of regular taxpayers. Since tax-paying business owners lack political clout, they are prone to being overloaded with obligations.

“The system is designed to win the confidence of the majority, not to enable the minority that thinks commercially, builds formally, and pays consistently,” Shroff added
