A Noida-based doctor, Dr Goyal, was duped of Rs 59 lakh in a 'digital arrest' scam. The incident occurred on July 13 when the doctor received a call from a person claiming to be an official from the Telephone Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The caller accused her of using her phone to distribute pornographic videos. When she denied the allegations, the scammer coerced her into joining a video call and threatened severe repercussions, claiming she was under 'digital arrest.'
For the next 48 hours, Dr Goyal endured a fake interrogation and transferred Rs 59.54 lakh to a specified account under pressure. However, she later realised that she was scammed. She filed a complaint with the Noida cyber crime cell on July 22 and police launched an investigation.
Police have identified the account where the money was sent. Vivek Ranjan Rai, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime), confirmed that the account details are under verification, and appropriate action will follow, reported NDTV.

Digital Arrest Scam
The 'digital arrest' scam is gaining traction among fraudsters. This method involves confining victims to their homes and posing as law enforcement officials using fake IDs to intimidate and extort money from them.
The Noida police have issued an advisory highlighting the rise in such incidents, with around ten cases reported in recent months. They urge the public to verify such suspicious calls, especially those via WhatsApp or video calls and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or cyber cell immediately.
