A mild earthquake struck Delhi-NCR early Monday morning, causing tremors that startled residents across the region. The quake, which lasted for a few seconds, led to people rushing out of their homes and offices as a precautionary measure.

According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.0 and occurred on 17 February 2025 at 5:36 AM IST. The epicentre was recorded in New Delhi at a depth of 5 km, with coordinates 28.59°N latitude and 77.16°E longitude.

Although the tremors were strong enough to be felt in residential and commercial areas, there have been no reports of significant damage or casualties. Many residents took to social media to share their experiences, with some posting videos of ceiling fans and household objects shaking.

Delhi-NCR falls in Seismic Zone IV, making it susceptible to moderate to strong earthquakes. Authorities have advised people to stay alert and follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks.

In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to the social media platform X to ensure everyone's safety. He wrote, "Tremors were felt in Delhi and surrounding areas. I urge everyone to stay calm, follow safety guidelines, and remain alert for any possible aftershocks. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation."

The quake sparked a wave of reactions on social media. Many users took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their experiences, with some expressing fear while others injected humour into the situation.

One user wrote, "Shallow earthquakes are scary. That rumbling sound was terrifying! Woke up to my room door having a dance battle. I also just went to sleep at 5 too. #earthquake"

Another user showed concern, posting, "We hope you all are safe, Delhi! For any emergency help, #Dial112."

A third user humorously shared their experience, "Me to wese bhi zameen pe sota hu, jo awaaz aayi bhai aur jo me dara hu wo me hi jaanta hu 🫠..!"

Another joked about their disrupted sleep schedule, saying, "Wanted to wake up early today to work out, took an entire earthquake in Delhi jolting my bed to make that possible. I’m wide awake now—thanks, let’s go to the gym!"
