The Election Commission on Tuesday issued a show cause notice against the Delhi BJP unit, an action that came a day after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) reached the top poll body alleging that the saffron party was using 'absurd' content on social media to tarnish the image of its convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Delhi BJP Virendra Sachdeva has been asked to respond to the notice by November 23 night.

The Poll Panel asked the Delhi BJP to refrain from commenting on the private lives of the leaders belonging to their rival parties. It also said that criticism based on unverified allegations or distortions shall be avoided.

A delegation of the AAP reached the EC headquarters on Monday and got a complaint registered against the BJP alleging it was involved in the Character Assassination of Arvind Kejriwal by posting cheap and unsubstantiated facts against their leader.

“A delegation of the AAP met ED officials today. We sought time from them because the BJP was trying to tarnish the image of Arvind Kejriwal through its social media posts. We asked the poll body to take requisite action against the BJP. We got a detailed complaint registered against the BJP over its social media posts on Nov 5. We hope EC will act on it,” AAP leader Raghav Chadha said while speaking to media outside the EC office.
