Former Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, has come forward to clarify the controversy stirred by his recent comments on the Babri Masjid, stating that his words were taken out of context and misrepresented online.
Speaking at the India Today Conclave in Mumbai on Thursday, Chandrachud pointed to how social media distorts statements by removing them from their original context.
Chandrachud addressed the row over his reported comment that the “erection of the Babri Masjid was a fundamental act of desecration.” He said his words had been lifted out of context, leading to a misinterpretation of his views on the Ayodhya dispute.
“What is happening on social media is that people lift one part of the answer and combine it with another part, completely removing the context,” he said, addressing criticism that followed his remark reportedly describing the construction of the Babri Masjid as a “fundamental act of desecration.”
Chandrachud was part of the five-judge bench that unanimously delivered the landmark Ayodhya verdict, allowing the construction of a Ram temple on the disputed site. Reaffirming the basis of the judgment, he stressed that the decision was rooted in legal reasoning and a careful assessment of evidence not influenced by religious faith or belief.
“The judgment was 1,045 pages long because the case record was over 30,000 pages. Most people who criticise it have not read the judgment. It is easy to post opinions on social media without reading the full document,” he remarked, highlighting the depth and complexity of the legal process behind the verdict.
He further noted that the court couldn’t overlook historical facts when evaluating the evidence. According to Chandrachud, the verdict was grounded in a very careful review of records and legal arguments, rather than any ideological leaning.
