Former Punjab director general of police (DGP) Mohammad Mustafa has claimed that his deceased son, Aqil Akhtar used to torture his wife and mother for money to buy drugs. The retired IPS officer also alleged that on one occasion, Aqil had set their house on fire.
Haryana Police booked Mohammad Mustafa and his wife Razia Sultana, a former minister from the state, in connection with the death of their 35-year-old son. As per Panchkula DCP Srishti Gupta, on October 16, Akhtar, a resident of Sector 4, MDC, Panchkula, was found dead at his residence, adding no foul play was initially suspected, and the body was handed over to the family for last rites after a post-mortem examination.
Later, a complaint was registered by a person named Shamshuddin. Videos surfaced, purportedly made by Aqil prior to his death, alleging personal disputes and apprehensions about threats to his life. "On October 17, a complaint was received from Shamshuddin of Malerkotla, Punjab, alleging foul play in the incident," the DCP said.
"The registration of an FIR absolutely does not mean that someone’s guilt has been proven. The real investigation will begin now after the FIR is registered, and in a few days, the truth will come out before the public," Mustafa said, reacting to the FIR registered against him, as per a Hindustan Times report.
Aqil Was A Drug Addict, Says Father
Mustafa said his son had been a drug addict for nearly two decades adding that the family was long struggling to manage it. He further revealed that the family had been seeking treatment for his drug addiction since 2007, including at PGIMER Chandigarh, but Aqil repeatedly relapsed over the years.
"He was into drugs since he was studying in Class 10 at Welham Boys School in Dehradun and was expelled from multiple schools in Chandigarh. Since 2007, we had been getting him treated for addiction, but he would relapse. Due to psychosis, he had started imagining things. He harassed his wife and mother for money for drugs and had even set our house on fire once. We had filed police complaints against him multiple times at Panchkula but would retract considering he was our blood," The Indian Express quoted the ex-DGP as saying.
"He would not even remember the date or time of when he would record a particular video and would later retract his words after some hours. He would also torture his mother asking for money for drugs and had set house on fire," the father also claimed.
Twist In The Case
The complaint claimed Aqil posted a video on 27 August before his death, in which he accused his father and wife of having an illicit relationship, prompting police to launch a probe. The complaint also mentioned the role of Aqil's mother and sister in the case. However, another video emerged on social media, which cannot be independently verified, shows Aqil saying he spoke wrong about his family because he was not well. He praised his kin in the second video, making the case more complicated.
