The Government of India has implemented a range of welfare schemes aimed at improving the lives of common people. These initiatives provide financial support and various forms of assistance to those in need.

One such initiative is the National Food Security Act (NFSA), which ensures access to food grains at subsidised or even free rates for eligible individuals. To avail these benefits, individuals must possess a ration card, which acts as both an entitlement to these services and a valid identity proof.

The government issues four distinct types of ration cards, each colour-coded to represent the specific benefits it offers. These cards come with different levels of support, and the colour of the ration card indicates the scope of the benefits associated with it.

By categorising ration cards based on benefits, the government ensures that assistance is targeted appropriately to those in need.

Pink or Red Ration Card:  This card is mostly provided to families that are above the poverty line. With this ration card, an individual can purchase food grains at normal rates. Additionally, subsidies are also provided through this card. Benefits of the Ujjwala scheme and housing schemes can also be availed through this card.

Yellow Ration Card:  This ration card is issued to people who fall below the poverty line (BPL). With this card, an individual can purchase wheat, rice, lentils, sugar and kerosene at subsidised rates. This ration card is given priority in any government scheme.

White Ration Card:  This card is given to economically well-off individuals who do not rely on government schemes for food grains. This card is commonly used as an address proof or identity card. Some government schemes can also be availed with this card.

Blue or Orange Ration Card:  This ration card is issued to economically weaker individuals who do not fall under the BPL category. These people can buy food grains such as wheat, rice and kerosene at lower-than-normal rates. In some states, these ration cards also offer discounts on water and electricity bills.
