Fact Check: Following the murder of a 5-year-old child in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur, two videos are going viral on social media. The first video shows a clash between police and protesters, while the second one shows a mob. Both videos are being shared with the claim that migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are being chased out of Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar.
Vishvas News investigated and found the first viral video to be from Indonesia, while the second has been online for over a month and a half. Both videos are being shared with false claims. No such incidents have been reported in Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has also assured that security will be provided in this matter.
Viral post
Instagram user ‘b_r_a_n_d_e_d_k_a_m_n_a’ posted the video (archived link) on September 17, 2025, with the caption, "Punjabis are chasing away all Biharis, this is a scene from Hoshiarpur, Punjab."
The video has 'Nepal' written on it in Punjabi.
Another user, ‘its_saroj_9588', posted a video of the mob (archive link) claiming it to be from Jalandhar, with the caption, "Punjab people are chasing away people from UP and Bihar..."
Investigation
To verify the viral claim, we reviewed both videos separately.
First video
The first video shows a clash between police and protesters. The shields carried by the officers feature the words ‘POLISI’, indicating that they are not from the Punjab Police.
On extracting key frames and conducting a Google Lens search, we found the viral video on the YouTube channel Vlog Jabar, uploaded on September 4, 2025. The footage is to be reported from Indonesia.
A video of the same incident, from a different angle, was uploaded to the YouTube channel @mou-o3c on September 2, 2025. According to the video, “The protest escalated into a violent clash between the public and police. The user identified himself as being from Indonesia.”
Facebook user ‘Fuji Pangandro’ posted a longer version of the viral clip on September 1, 2025, claiming it was from Ternate, Indonesia.
According to a Hindustan Times report dated September 1, 2025, “Protests erupted last week in Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, over housing allowances for lawmakers that are nearly 10 times the minimum wage and six people died in the violence.”
A news photo shows security forces holding shields marked with the words POLISI. The caption reads, "Police officers cover themselves with anti-riot shields as a protester hurls stones at them outside the parliament in Jakarta, Indonesia, on August 31, 2025."
To verify further, we contacted Dainik Jagran reporter Hazari Lal Yadav in Hoshiarpur. He confirmed that while the Hoshiarpur incident sparked public outrage, there have been no reports of any migrant being chased away.
This proves that the viral claim is false; the video is from Indonesia, not Punjab.
We scanned the profile of the user who shared the video with the false claim and found that the user has posted similar videos claiming that migrants are being chased out of Punjab.
Second video
We also captured a screenshot from the second video and conducted a Google Lens search. The clip was traced to Instagram user ‘jalandhar_foodexpress’, who posted it on August 12, 2025. The viral video’s opening segment matches this post, which was originally linked to the sale.
The video shows a signboard for Manjit Attachi Studio. Using this clue, we performed a Google keyword search and found that the location matches the one shown in the viral video.
While this confirms the viral video originates from Jalandhar, it has been circulating online for about a month and a half, and no exact date has been established.
We contacted Dinesh Sharma, a reporter for Dainik Jagran in Jalandhar. He confirmed that no such incident has taken place there, and life in the city continues as usual. Although some residents held a rally to protest the incident, there have been no reports of anyone being chased away.
According to a news report published on Dainik Jagran's website on September 10, 2025, “A five-year-old boy was kidnapped and murdered in Hoshiarpur. The accused is from Uttar Pradesh. Rape is suspected. Police have arrested the accused.”
According to a report published on News18's website on September 19, 2025, “Following the child's murder, tensions have erupted in several districts of Punjab regarding labourers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Nearly 20 sarpanches in Hoshiarpur have stated that they will not issue residence certificates to those coming from outside. Following this, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has clarified that Punjab has always been a land of hardworking people, and he is fully prepared to provide security.”
Conclusion: Old videos from Indonesia and Jalandhar are being shared with the false claim of migrants being driven out of Punjab.
