Fact Check: Amid the crisis caused by the cancellation of several IndiGo flights, a video is going viral on social media. In it, some passengers can be seen sitting on the floor at the airport and eating food. Some users are sharing it and claiming that amid the recent IndiGo crisis, passengers were stranded on the runway.
Vishvas News investigated and found that the viral video dates back to January 2024, when a Goa-Delhi flight was diverted to Mumbai due to an operational issue. Subsequently, a video of passengers sitting on the apron area of Mumbai airport went viral. The video is now being shared, linking it to the current crisis.
What is the viral post?
Facebook user 'Khabar Bharat’ shared the video (archived link) on December 6, with the caption, "Indigo passengers seen eating on the airport runway; video goes viral."
Passengers are facing numerous problems due to the operational issues with Indigo Airlines flights. Meanwhile, some pictures and videos are going viral on social media, in which passengers are seen sitting on the airport runway. At the same time, passengers can be seen sitting on the runway (ground) and eating food. Passengers were seen sitting on the ground near the plane. According to the information, after the Indigo Goa-Delhi flight was delayed by 12 hours, passengers are sitting and eating food at the Mumbai airport. Investigation
To verify the viral claim, we extracted keyframes from the video and searched them using Google Lens. This led us to the two screenshots of the video shared by ANI's X handle on January 15, 2024. According to reports, a video of passengers eating food on the apron area of Mumbai airport has gone viral after an IndiGo flight to Delhi encountered operational issues. This incident occurred on January 14, 2024, with flight number 6E 2195 from Goa to Delhi.
According to a report published on ANI's website on January 15, 2024, after a Goa-Delhi flight was diverted to Mumbai and a video of passengers eating on the airport ramp went viral, the airline apologised and promised to take steps to prevent such incidents in the future. The flight was diverted to Mumbai due to low visibility in Delhi.
According to a follow-up report on the incident published on India TV's website on January 17, 2024, “IndiGo Airlines and Mumbai Airport have been fined by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in this matter. IndiGo Airlines has been fined ₹1.2 crore, and Mumbai Airport ₹60 lakh for passengers eating in the apron area. Regulator BCAS has fined Mumbai airport operator MIAL ₹60 lakh and DGCA ₹30 lakh.”
According to a news report published on Dainik Jagran's website on December 6, "IndiGo Airlines has cancelled several flights for the fifth consecutive day. This has created panic among passengers. The airline has already issued a statement saying that it will take two to three days for the situation to return to normal. Meanwhile, the DGCA has established a high-level four-member committee to review and assess the situation. The DGCA says that IndiGo failed to prepare for implementing the changed duty periods, flight duty periods, flight time limitations and fixed rest periods under the FDTL CAR 2024."
We contacted Mumbai-based journalist Varun Singh regarding this. He confirmed that the viral video dates back to 2024, when a Goa-Delhi flight was diverted to Mumbai, and the video went viral during that time.
The user who shared the old video during the current crisis has approximately 29000 followers.
Conclusion: The video of passengers sitting on the ground and eating in the airport apron area dates back to January 2024, and has no connection to the recent crisis.
