A plan has been put in place to deal with waterlogging at the G20 venue and other important places in case of rain during the two-day event in Delhi next month, police said on Thursday. The event is scheduled to take place at the Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition-Convention Centre in Pragati Maidan from September 9 to September 10.

According to the plan, a battery of tractor-mounted heavy-duty 50 horsepower pumps will be deployed to clear the excess water, mechanical road sweeping (MRS) vehicles, also equipped with heavy water jetting machines will be deployed to clear mud and silt off-road sides, and a 'super sucker' will be deployed to clear clogged drains and sewer lines.

The machines will be deployed round-the-clock in two 12-hour shifts by a sanitary inspector, a helper, and a probationer IAS and DANICS officer.

After heavy rain in the city last month, a tunnel leading to Ring Road at Pragati Maidan, the major Summit site, was flooded with water, forcing the LG to devise a graded water evacuation strategy.

After heavy rain in the city last month, a tunnel leading to Ring Road at Pragati Maidan, the major Summit site, was flooded with water, forcing the LG to devise a graded water evacuation strategy.

The design called for collecting water in small reservoirs of 1,000 litres capacity each, which would subsequently be piped into reservoirs of 2,000 litres, and ultimately into reservoirs of 50,000 litres.

According to officials, the collected water is then pumped into a nearby drain for release into the Yamuna.

Delhi LG V K Saxena visited numerous places prone to flooding on Wednesday to assess preparedness, according to a Raj Niwas official.

The LG directed officials at a recent G20 preparation review meeting to develop a contingency plan to deal with heavy waterlogging around the international convention center at Pragati Maidan, the summit's venue, as well as Rajghat, delegates' hotels, and other strategic locations, in the event of a heavy downpour in the city.
