What Is G20 Or Group of 20?
The G20 is an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union (EU). The G20 brings together world's largest economies to deliberate on issues related to the global economy, climate crisis, international financial stability and sustainable development.
The G20 was founded in 1999 as a collective to face the crisis facing the world. Since 2008, the G20 group of leaders and foreign dignitaries including finance ministers, heads of state have held a summit once a year with separate themes mainly focusing on the global economy.
The 2023 G20 Summit will be hosted under India's presidency. The G20 operates without a permanent secretariat or staff.
As of 2023, there are 20 members in the group including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, South Korea, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union.
The guest invitees of the G20 include Spain, the United Nations, the World Bank, the African Union and ASEAN, among others.
What Does The G20 Logo Mean? Know Its Significance
The 2023 G20 Logo is a juxtaposition of Earth with India's national flower Lotus. It shows the planet atop the lotus which symbolises growth amid challenges. It also draws inspiration from the tiranga or the national flag which includes the colours of saffron, white, green and blue.
The Earth reflects India's pro-planet approach to life, one in perfect harmony with nature. Right below the G20 logo is "Bharat" written in the Devanagari script.
What Is The Theme Of This Year's G20 Summit?
"One Earth · One Family · One Future" or "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" is the theme for this year's G20 Summit and is drawn from the ancient Sanskrit text of the Maha Upanishad. Essentially the theme affirms the value of all life -human, animal, plant, and microorganisms- and how they are connected with each other on earth and in the wider universe.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that there will be a shift in the G20's agenda under India's presidency as it will take a more humanitarian approach that aligns with the issues facing the global south.
The spotlight will also be on LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) with the objective of an environmentally sustainable world and how to adapt responsible choices individually as well as a part of national development.
