Assam News: The Gauhati High Court will remain closed on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, in view of the state funeral of singer Zubeen Garg. A notification issued by the court stated that the holiday would cover the Principal Seat and connected judicial sections. However, the Bench and offices preparing daily and supplementary cause lists will continue to function. The High Court will instead work on November 1, 2025, to make up for the closure.

Zubeen Garg, a leading cultural icon of Assam, passed away in Singapore last week at the age of 52 after suffering a seizure while swimming at Lazarus Island. His death has plunged the state and the Indian music industry into mourning.

The singer’s mortal remains reached Guwahati on Sunday, after being flown from Singapore to Delhi and then to Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma received the body in Delhi and accompanied it to Guwahati. After arriving, the remains were first taken to Zubeen’s residence in Kahilipara, where family members offered their respects. The body was then moved to the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex, allowing the public to pay homage.

The Assam government declared a three-day state mourning from September 20 to 22, cancelling all official functions, entertainment programmes and ceremonial events. A special cabinet meeting was held on September 21 to coordinate funeral arrangements with the family and cultural organisations.

Heavy crowds have already gathered at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and outside the singer’s residence. Additional police personnel have been deployed to maintain order.
