Assam Politics: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi attacked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday over his allegation that Assam Congress president and his wife have a link with Pakistan.

"About 14-15 years ago, my wife, who is a well-known expert in public policy, worked on an international project in South Asia focused on climate change. She spent one year in Pakistan before returning to India around 2012-13. Since then, she has continued her work and took a job in India in 2015. I also remember going with her once, in 2013. So, they (BJP leaders) are making an issue of it as their work is only demeaning, and that’s why they are creating this whole thing like a C-grade Bollywood movie," he added.

Himanta Has Old Habit Of Deceiving People: Gogoi

He further added the CM (Himanta Biswa Sarma) has this old habit of deceiving people. "When Rahul Gandhi came to Assam, the chief minister used to claim that it was his (Gandhi's) 'body double'. Now, as he is making false allegations against me, I believe he thinks of my 'body double' too," he said.

My question is simple, if we have done something illegal, why has the government been silent for these many years, Gogoi asked.

Gogoi Slams Govt Over Illegal Coal Mining

Citing recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids as "evidence of illegal coal mining operations" in the state, Gogoi pointed to the April 24 raids conducted across Assam and Meghalaya, where the ED reportedly unearthed a coal smuggling network, seizing Rs 1.58 crore in cash, digital devices, and two luxury vehicles.

"This revelation proves the Assam CM wrong," Gogoi said, asserting that the ED's findings confirm the existence of an illegal coal syndicate operating across state borders.

He questioned the scope of the investigation, asking, "Will this probe stop at just Rs 1.58 crore? Why has no action been taken by the state and Central governments? This syndicate is putting immense pressure on the economy, ecology, and society of the Northeast."

Gogoi demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry, alleging political protection behind the illicit operations.
