Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader George Kurian stepped down on Tuesday as Minister of State (MoS) for Minority Affairs and Fisheries after his 6-year term as a Rajya Sabha member.
Kurian was the only minister from the Christian community in the central government. “The President of India, on the advice of the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of George Kurien from the Union Council of Ministers under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution with immediate effect," Rashtrapati Bhavan said in a statement.
Who Is George Kurian?
65-year-old Kurian joined BJP during its inception in 1980. He was an MoS since August 2024 in the third Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Kurian was not renominated for Rajya Sabha after BJP’s dismal performance in the Kerala Assembly elections. With the end of the current term he had to resign.
George Kurian was born on September 20, 1960, in Nambiyakulam, Ettumanoor municipality in Kerala’s Kottayam, according to the Ministry of Minority Affairs' website. He did his graduation and post-graduation in law after completing his schooling in his hometown.
Kurian Was Made A Minister in 2024
He was sworn in as Union Minister of State on June 9, 2024 and assumed charge of the Ministry of Minority Affairs and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying on June 11, 2024.
Earlier, Kurian had served as the Vice Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities and as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the then Union Minister of State for Railways, O Rajagopal.
