Global Liveability Index 2026: In the latest Global Liveability Index, New Delhi ranked 120, whereas Mumbai secured the 121st place, and Chennai and Bengaluru secured the 123rd and 127th places, respectively. The Economist Intelligence Unit Global Liveability Index 2026 was released like this week, calculating parameters on liveability. According to the index, Copenhagen in Denmark is ranked as the most liveable city among the 173 countries assessed. The second and third positions were taken by Vienna, Austria, and Melbourne, Australia, respectively. 

Did India Improve Its Conditions?

Both the Indian cities have excelled in education more than in healthcare, culture and environment. New Delhi scored 66.7 on education, 58.9 on infrastructure, 50 on stability, 41.7 on healthcare and 35.4 on culture and environment. Mumbai scored 58.3 on education, 51.8 on infrastructure, 60 on stability, 41.7 on healthcare and 33.3 on culture and environment.

Even as the Indian cities have performed well in jobs, services and consumption, they continue to remain backwards in civic systems. Air pollution, traffic congestion, uneven housing quality, weak public health capacity and pressure on basic services continue to weigh on liveability.

Srikanth Viswanathan, CEO of Janaagraha, an organisation working in the field of urban governance, expressed concern about the performance of Indian cities. He said that such poor rankings simply mean that we are becoming less attractive to global investors and talent. "We need to make our cities stronger and liveable."

How Is the Liveability Being Calculated?

The ranking assesses parameters across stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure to identify those offering the highest quality of life.

Copenhagen ranked first for the second consecutive time. The Danish capital scored perfectly in stability and infrastructure. When residents were asked what they enjoy the most in their city, they replied that they find pleasure in moving around in the city.
