A 25-year-old woman allegedly died after falling from the balcony of her residence in Uttar Pradesh's Greater Noida. The tragic incident occurred in the Jalpura area under Ecotech-III police station limits on Sunday night. The woman, identified as Deepika Nagar, was married for the past 1.5 years with her family spending nearly a crore on wedding celebrations.
"Last night, information was received that a woman - who had been married for one and a half years - died after jumping from a rooftop. Upon receiving this information, the police immediately reached the scene; necessary legal formalities are being conducted, and arrangements are being made for a post-mortem examination," Shailendra Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Central Noida, said, as quoted by an NDTV report.
Family Claims Deepika Was Mentally, Physically Harassed For Dowry
Deepika’s family has claimed that their daughter was tortured both mentally and physically for dowry. Meanwhile, police have arrested Deepika’s husband and father-in-law. "Based on a complaint filed by the victim's family members, the woman's husband, Ritick Tanwar, and father-in-law have been arrested in connection with this case," the police officer added.
In-Laws Unhappy With Dowry, Demanded More
During the wedding in December 2024, Deepika was given a Scorpio car, Rs 11 lakh in cash along with Rs 50 lakh gold. Apart from this, the family had also given furniture. Her in-laws, however, demanded additional Rs 50 lakh in cash along with a Fortuner car, stated a complaint by victim's father Sanjay Nagar.
Deepika Called Up Family Before Death
Before death, distressed Deepika had called up her family informing them about the harassment by her husband and in-laws. She allegedly told them that she was beaten up.
Soon after, Sanjay Nagar along with some relatives reached Deepika’s home to solve the matter. The family received the devastating news of Deepika’s death late night on Sunday. They were told that she had fallen from the balcony.
As per Deepika’s family, she had had severe injury marks on her body which indicated that she was assaulted and thrown from the balcony. They added that blood was coming from her ears and nose when they saw her body at the hospital.
'Beasts Killed Her': Deepika's Father
Deepika’s father told reporters that his daughter had been constantly complaining about her in-laws for the past 10 days.
"Those beasts killed her last night. They killed her out of greed for dowry. For the past 10 months, she had been constantly telling us about her plight, but we kept trying to reason with her. Yet, it made absolutely no difference to them whatsoever. We even spoke yesterday. I had actually met her yesterday as well. As soon as we left for home, we received a call at 12:30 am. There are visible marks of injury on her body. After killing her, they threw her down from the roof," Deepika's father told reporters.
