The defence ministry has issued a tender to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), marking a significant step towards enhancing India's aerial defence capabilities. The procurement of 97 Tejas Mk-1A light combat aircraft (LCA) for the Indian Air Force (IAF) underscores the government's commitment to bolstering its military strength. According to officials, the fighter jets are expected to cost around Rs 67,000 crore.

About Tejas Aircraft

The Tejas aircraft, renowned for its advanced capabilities, serves as a formidable platform capable of executing a wide range of missions. The decision to acquire 97 additional Tejas jets comes after the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) had cleared the project in November last year, reflecting a strategic imperative to bolster the IAF's combat fleet. This acquisition aligns with India's broader defence modernisation efforts and reinforces the country's commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

In addition to the procurement of Tejas aircraft, the DAC's approval also encompasses a proposal to upgrade the IAF's Su-30 fighter fleet. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) will undertake the modernization program, enhancing the combat capabilities and operational effectiveness of these aircraft.
