The Haryana government has constituted a panel to identify mining mafias in the Nuh district. The three-member committee has been asked to file a detailed report before the Supreme Court by July 15 after tracing the offenders.
The panel has only 10 days to pinpoint illegal miners in the region and suggest potential action to be taken against the accused. The team has also been asked to review the role of local governance in ongoing illegal activities, particularly the role of Sarpanch of Basai Meo village, where an illegal road was reportedly constructed through forest land. If any irregularity is established, the panel is supposed to recommend preventive measures and action against the involved parties under legal norms.
The committee will also examine the feasibility of providing compensation or alternative land to affected parties, as per the central empowered committee's (CEC) recommendations. With the CEC report annexed to the government's order, the Deputy Commissioner of Nuh has been instructed to submit all relevant documents and records to aid the inquiry.
The decision comes at the direction of the Chief Secretary of Haryana. The move intends to address environmental concerns and lawlessness posed by regular illegal mining in the Aravalli region.
According to Vishwas Kumar Meena, the deputy commissioner of Nuh, who is a member of the committee, “Our goal is to eradicate illegal mining from its roots. This committee has been formed to ensure that culprits are held accountable and such activities are prevented in the future. We are confident that within 10 days, we will identify the mafias involved in this illegal trade, and we will file a detailed affidavit in the Supreme Court before July 15,” Hindustan Times reported.
