The BJP registered a resounding victory in the Haryana civic polls, securing nine out of ten mayoral seats as counting concluded on Wednesday. The saffron party dominated key municipal corporations, including Ambala, Gurugram, Hisar, Karnal, Rohtak, Faridabad, Yamunanagar, Panipat and Sonipat. The only exception was Manesar, where Independent candidate Inderjit Yadav defeated BJP's Sundar Lal.

The results marked another setback for the Congress, which was aiming for a political revival following its recent defeat in the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections. The party lost in Rohtak, a traditional stronghold of senior leader Bhupinder Hooda. The BJP’s sweeping win underlined its continued dominance in the state’s political landscape.

Several BJP candidates won with significant margins. Parveen Joshi (Faridabad) secured victory by over 3,00,000 votes, while Raj Rani (Gurugram) won with a lead of 1,79,485 votes. Other notable winners included Rajiv Jain (Sonipat) and Renu Bala Gupta (Karnal). In Ambala, Shailja Sachdeva won the mayoral by-election.

The defection of key political figures from the opposition aided the BJP’s success. Former Congress leader Nikhil Madaan, who had served as Sonipat’s mayor, switched to the BJP before the assembly elections and won a legislative seat. Similarly, Shakti Rani Sharma, formerly of the Haryana Janchetna Party, joined the BJP and won the Kalka Assembly seat. The results further weakened the Congress, which has been grappling with internal factionalism.

The Haryana State Election Commission, in coordination with district administrations, implemented extensive arrangements to ensure a smooth and fair counting process. Elections were held on March 2 for mayors and ward members in seven municipal corporations, with bypolls for Ambala and Sonipat and additional elections for municipal committees. Panipat’s polling was conducted separately on March 9.

Despite the high-stakes contest, voter turnout remained low. Only 41 per cent of eligible voters participated, significantly lower than the 68 per cent recorded in the 2024 Assembly elections. Analysts attribute this decline to voter apathy and dissatisfaction with local governance.
