Hathras Stampede: As many as 121 people lost their lives following a stampede in Hathras that took place at a religious gathering in Ratibhanpur on Tuesday. A satsang that was being attended by thousands, saw a massive stampede after people started exiting the venue. A prima facie report suggests that the devotees rushed to seek blessings and collect soil from around the preacher's feet, and were stopped by the security personnel of 'Bhole Baba'. Later, they started pushing one another due to which several people fell to the ground, leading to chaos at the site.

Hathras Stampede: Here Are Top Updates

- Blood accumulation in the thoracic cavity due to chest injuries, asphyxia and rib injuries were the causes of death of the Hathras stampede victims whose bodies were brought to a hospital in Agra for post-mortem, a senior official was quoted as saying by PTI.

- A team from the National Commission for Women led by chairperson Rekha Sharma and member secretary Meenakshi Negi met the injured women victims.

- She said that there is a need to counsel and educate women, as they become easy targets for Babas in such events due to lack of education.

- A complaint has been filed under sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita has been registered against one Devprakash Madhukar and other unidentified organisers of the Satsang program, held in Sikandara Rao in Hathras.

- Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said a judicial inquiry headed by a retired High Court judge will be initiated. He also appointed Additional DG Agra and Divisional Commissioner Aligarh to investigate the incident and directed him to submit the report within 24 hours.

- The FIR has been registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 126 (2) (wrongful restraint), 223 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by the public servant), 238 (causing disappearance of evidence), according to an officer cited by PTI.

- Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the loss of lives in the stampede and wished speedy recovery to the injured.

- The Police conducted a search operation at Ram Kutir Charitable Trust in Mainpuri district in search of 'Bhole Baba', who conducted a Satsang in Hathras where a stampede took place on Tuesday.

- A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Allahabad High Court demanding an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the case.

- Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also took stock of the situation and met the people injured in the incident. He also inquired about their health and ordered officials to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured persons.

- The chief minister held a meeting of senior officials at the police lines and took details of the incident and the action taken thereafter.
