West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised eyebrows over the abrupt resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, suggesting there may be more to the move than just health concerns. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday at Nabanna, Banerjee said she had no official comment to make on the matter but pointedly noted, “He is a healthy man. I think his health is absolutely fine.”

"Let us watch. He is a healthy man. I think his health is absolutely fine," Banerjee told reporters on Tuesday at a press conference held at the state secretariat, Nabanna. While refraining from making a direct comment on the resignation, she said, “Political parties cannot decide why Dhankhar resigned. I have no comments on the issue.” Still, her remarks left the door open for speculation, suggesting that there could be more behind the move than is currently known.

The Trinamool Congress chief appeared cautious yet clearly skeptical as she addressed the issue.

Dhankhar, who served as the Governor of West Bengal before becoming Vice President, had a notably confrontational relationship with Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. Their term overlapped with multiple clashes, strongly worded letters, and accusations of constitutional overreach. Despite the tensions of the past, Banerjee’s current remarks hint at concern or at least suspicion over Dhankhar’s sudden decision to step down mid-term.

Dhankhar formally resigned on Monday evening, citing health concerns as his reason for invoking Article 67(a) of the Constitution. He submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, becoming only the third Vice President in India’s history to resign before completing a full term.

His sudden exit has triggered a wave of questions from the opposition. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the resignation, questioning a social media post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and implying that Dhankhar may have been pressured to step down.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh claimed the resignation was “forced” and questioned the real reasons behind it. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh echoed the concerns, albeit in a more diplomatic tone. Posting on X, he wrote, “Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation. Is health the only reason? If so, get well soon. Otherwise, curiosity remains.”
