JE News Desk:  Amid scorching heat, nearly 100 people in states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha have lost their lives in the last three days.  As many as 54 people have died in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia while 44 people have reportedly lost their lives in Bihar in the last three days.  According to reports, the deaths in Ballia prompted the Uttar Pradesh government to launch a probe. Meanwhile, Odisha today confirmed a death due to severe heat in the state. 

Here are the top updates from heatwave reeling in northern states:

-At least 54 people, admitted to a district hospital in ,Ballia died between June 15, 16, and 17 with scorching heat aggravating their pre-existing ailments.

-In UP’s Ballia, most of the patients were over the age of 60, officials said.

-On Saturday, the Ballia district recorded a maximum temperature of 43 degrees Celsius, five degrees above normal and a relative humidity of 25 per cent, aggravating the impact of heat.

 -“All the individuals were suffering from some ailments and their conditions worsened due to the extreme heat,” Ballia chief medical officer Jayant Kumar told Associated Press on Saturday. He added that most of the deaths were because of heart attack, brain stroke and diarrhea. 

-In Bihar, of 44 deaths, 35 have died in Patna alone – 19 patients died in Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) and 16 in PMCH. Nine people have died in other districts of the state, India Today reported.

-As per the daily weather bulletin of Bihar, Sheikhpura remained the hottest place in the state with the maximum temperature of 45.1 degrees C, Patna 44.7 degrees Celsius, Gaya 44.1 degrees C, West Champaran 44.4 degrees C, Bhojpur 44.5 degrees C, Aurangabad 44.8 degrees Celsius, Nawada 44.1 degrees Celsius and Siwan degrees Celsius on Saturday.

-The Odisha government confirmed the first heatwave-related death and sanctioned an ex gratia of Rs 50,000 for the deceased's family. The victim was a middle-aged person from the Balasore district, a senior official at the Special Relief Commissioner's (SRC) office said on Sunday, adding that the state has so far received allegations of 20 deaths due to heatwaves.

-The Met Office in its forecast said hot weather conditions are likely to continue in some districts for the next three days. “Hot and discomforting weather is likely to continue for the next 3-4 days. People are advised to take precautionary measures such as avoiding heat exposure during peak hours, staying hydrated, and caring for vulnerable persons including old, children, sick, and pregnant women,” SRC said quoting the IMD forecast.

-The capital city of Bhubaneswar on Sunday recorded a maximum temperature of 33.2 degree Celsius and overall humidity level of 76 per cent by 8.30 am, IMD said.
