Himachal Pradesh government on Wednesday ordered eateries to display names and addresses of operators, proprietors, and managers outside the establishments. The move has been introduced to enhance transparency and public safety amid reports of human waste and other harmful substances in food items in different parts of the country.

Congress leader and state minister Vikramaditya Singh, in a Facebook post, said the orders in this regard were issued during a joint meeting with the Public Works Urban Development and Municipal Corporation.

The move came a day after UP CM Yogi Adityanath issued a similar diktat to curb adulteration in food items across the state.

“In Himachal, every restaurant and fast food outlet will be required to display the owner’s ID to ensure that people face no difficulties. Instructions for this have been issued in the Urban Development and Municipal Corporation meeting held yesterday," Singh wrote in a Facebook post.

UP CM Adityanath had expressed grave concern over the incidents of food adulteration, saying that such actions are not only disgusting but pose severe health risks. The government also directed that all the food establishments in the state must have CCTV cameras installed, and the footage must be available to the police or the local administration on request.

The orders have been issued in response to a series of alarming food contamination incidents. One such incident, which gained widespread attention through a viral video on September 12, involved a teenager caught spitting on rotis while preparing them at an eatery in Saharanpur district. The individual was later taken into custody.

In another case last week, authorities arrested a juice vendor in Ghaziabad following reports that he had mixed urine into the juice. Similarly, in June, two men in Noida were apprehended for allegedly contaminating juice with their saliva.

The issue of maintaining hygiene at eateries was also fanned after Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu claimed that the YSRCP government used substandard materials and animal fat in the preparation of the sacred Tirupati Laddu.
