NIA Raid In Tamil Nadu: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday conducted multiple raids across Tamil Nadu in connection with their investigation into a banned terrorist organisation, Hizb-ut-Tahrir. The central agency had reportedly arrested a member of the outfit in 2021 from Madurai. The anti-terror agency on Sunday raided multiple locations including Chennai, Thanjavur, Erode, Trichy, Pudukottai, and Thiruppur of the southern state. The raids are currently underway, news agency ANI reported citing sources.
The case was originally arrested at Thideernagar Police Station in Madurai against the accused for allegedly uploading denigrating posts on Facebook. The case was subsequently shifted to the NIA which re-registered the case on April 15 for a detailed probe into the matter.
Earlier in 2021, the anti-terror agency had arrested Mohammad Iqbal N alias Senthil Kumar, a resident of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, and was charged under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 13(1)(b) of the Unlawful Activities(Prevention) Act, 1967 at Thideer Nagar police station in Madurai.
According to news agency ANI, Mohammed Iqbal had used his Facebook account "Thoonga Vizhigal Rendu is in Kazimar Street" to upload posts that denigrated a particular community and created communal disharmony among different religions in a manner prejudicial to the maintenance of public order.
The NIA reportedly said that the accused conspired with other suspects in the name of Hizb-ut-Tahrir, a banned terror outfit across several nations, and professed and preached about establishing the Islamic State Caliphate or Khilafa and implementing Sharia globally, including in India, by deposing non-Islamic governments.
