China Virus Outbreak: In yet another health crisis, China has reported sudden surge in the cases of respiratory infections in the past few days. The officials stated that the cases are probably triggered by Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). In spite of several social media posts describing the situation a crisis, there has not been any official declaration of state of emergency by Chinese authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO).
The reports suggest that the virus has been spreading at a very high rate along with the other viruses like influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Covid-19, reported CNBC TV18. The surge in cases of respiratory infections is a matter of concern as it is happening in the months of winters, a time when the respiratory illness generally peak. Most cases of HMPV in children occur in those aged 5 years or younger as the respiratory system is generally weak at this stage to combat a serious virus.

What Is Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)?
HMPV was discovered in 2001 in Netherlands during the research work on viruses and their effect. It generally spreads through contact with infected individuals, including coughing and sneezing. The American Lung Association has also recognised that it can be the cause of acute respiratory infections especially among the children and aged people.
HMPV Symptoms, Treatment and Precautions
The primary symptoms of HMPV include cough, fever, and sore throat. However, in several cases it leads to shortness of breath, pneumonia, bronchitis, or asthma exacerbations. People having these symptoms were guided to get themselves checked for the confirmation. Though the virus is very dangerous and can lead to multiple health issues, it can be prevented through several steps, including washing hands frequently with soap and water, avoid touching face without washing hands, wearing masks, and avoiding unnecessary outings. Though there is no vaccine for this virus yet, the netizens need to take precautions and get themselves checked in a state of doubt.
