A man from Delhi used ChatGPT-5 to outsmart a scammer, leaving the fraudster pleading for forgiveness. By creating a fake payment link with ChatGPT, he was able to capture the scammer’s geolocation and a photograph of his face. The entire episode was shared in a Reddit post, which quickly went viral and drew widespread attention.

A Reddit user shared how he turned the tables on a scammer using ChatGPT, describing the episode as making the fraudster “beg for mercy.” Posted in the r/delhi subreddit, the story explained how a routine scam attempt escalated into an AI-assisted sting operation.

The man recounted that the scammer had reached out to him on Facebook, posing as a college senior and IAS officer. The scam involved a supposed “CRPF officer friend” who was relocating and allegedly selling expensive furniture and appliances at bargain prices. Sensing something was off, the man reached out to the claimed friend on WhatsApp and quickly realised it was a fraud.

How ChatGPT Was Used To Track The Scammer

The situation escalated when the scammer sent pictures of the items along with a QR code requesting payment from a separate profile featuring an Army uniform photo. The user noticed the scammer’s repeated insistence on immediate payment, which raised further suspicion.

He then turned to ChatGPT to create a fake payment portal. The portal was designed to look legitimate but secretly captured the scammer’s geolocation and a photo via their front camera. “I asked the AI to generate a simple, functional webpage,” he explained, adding that the model produced the code in minutes. He hosted the tracker and sent the scammer the link, claiming it would “speed up the payment process.”

The scammer took the bait, unknowingly revealing his precise location, IP address, and a clear front-camera image. The man responded by sending the scammer his own picture and location as a form of retribution.

Soon after, the scammer began calling from multiple numbers, pleading for forgiveness. Screenshots shared by the Reddit user showed the fraudster panicking, even promising to “quit this line of work entirely” and desperately asking for pardon.

While acknowledging that the scammer might be targeting someone else soon after, the man admitted that “stealing from a thief is an oddly satisfying feeling.”
