Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge recently faced a farmer at his residence in Kalaburagi, where heavy rains have caused large-scale crop damage. The man had come to raise concerns about his losses but ended up hearing Kharge compare the situation with his own farmland.

A video of the interaction shows Kharge asking the farmer how much land he cultivated. When the farmer replied “four acres,” Kharge responded that he had planted on 40 acres and suffered greater damage. He added, “It is like someone with three children explaining the struggle to one with six.”

Kharge further told the farmer not to approach him only for publicity. He said he was fully aware of the crop losses this year and stated that sustaining large-scale farming was even more difficult.

The remarks come as farmers in Kalaburagi continue to demand that the district be declared flood-hit. They have sought a special package from the state government to cover the extensive damage.

The JDS criticised Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his exchange with a farmer. The party accused Kharge of mocking the farmer, stating that for Congress, farmers are important only in “speeches and manifestos.”

In a post on X, JDS wrote, “Mr Kharge, after decades in politics, holding powerful posts, becoming @INCIndia’s national president, having your son @PriyankKharge as a minister, and your party ruling the state, you still don’t have the patience to listen to farmers in your own district?”
