India-Canada Tension: Amid escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Canada over the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that the Indian government had issued an advisory to the Indian students in Canada, urging them to exercise utmost caution.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi also reassured that the Indian Consulate in Canada is actively working to support Indian students. He further emphasised that if any Indian students face any issues or concerns, they should feel free to contact the Consulate for help and guidance.

“We've issued an advisory to take precautions. Our Consulate is working there. We have said that if they face any problem, they can contact our Consulate,” Bagchi was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Indian government issued an advisory for Indian nationals and students in Canada, requesting them to “exercise utmost caution" in view of “growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and violence in Canada”.

The Indian government’s advisory came after the Canadian government issued a similar warning for its people residing in India amid an ongoing standoff between the two nations over the alleged killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The MEA spokesperson also said that Canada is becoming a place for organised crime and needs to think about its international reputation. "Yes, I do think there is a degree of prejudice here. They have made allegations and taken action on them. To us, it seems that these allegations by the government of Canada are primarily politically driven," he said.

The controversy was sparked by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations of the potential involvement of Indian government agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Colombia in June.

"Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the Government of India and the killing of a Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar," Trudeau said.
