Ranveer Allahbadia SC Hearing: The Supreme Court on Tuesday came down heavily against YouTube podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, who has been embroiled in massive controversy, over his crass remarks on Samay Raina's YouTube show, India's Got Latent. Rapping the YouTuber, the top court severely castigated him, describing his remarks as a "show of a perverted mind".
However, the apex court granted him protection from arrest and directed that no further FIRs shall be lodged against him for his comments. The top court also asked him to deposit his passport at the Thane police station and said he shall not leave the country without the prior permission of the court.
The Supreme Court, meanwhile, has also asked the Centre if any strict rules are being contemplated to restrict "obscene" content on YouTube and other social media platforms. The court further asked for the assistance of Attorney General for India R Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta during the next hearing on Allahbadia's plea.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh asked Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing in a different case, to convey its message to the AG and the SG, raising concerns about the lack of regulation of online content. The Court said that it would be "very happy" if the Government did something, but if not, the top court said that it would not "leave a vacuum" and take action on its own.
"There was this case of Youtubers. Union of India is a party. We would like to do something. If Government of India will willingly do it, we will be very happy. Otherwise, we are not going to leave this vacuum. The way it is being misused by so-called YouTube channels and all these things are going on. We have issued notice. So please request the Attorney General and the Solicitor General to be here on the next date of hearing. We would like to do something. We may not overlook the importance and sensitivity of the issue", Justice Surya Kant said, as quoted by Live Law.
The top court's stern remarks came while hearing the plea of Ranveer Allahbadia seeking clubbing of multiple FIRs filed against him in Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra over his "watch parents' having sex" remarks at one of the episodes of India's Got Latent.
"There is something dirty in his mind which has been vomited on the YouTube show. The words you have used will make daughters, sisters, parents and even the society feel ashamed. It shows a perverted mind. If this is not obscenity, what is it? Why should we quash or club the FIRs against you?" the top court said.
"Such behaviour has to be condemned. Just because you are popular you cannot take the society for granted. Is there anyone on earth who will like this language. There is something very dirty in his mind, which has been vomited by him in the program. He is insulting parents also. Why should the courts favour him?"
Allahbadia has approached the apex court seeking to club multiple FIRs lodged against him across India over his recent inappropriate comments during his guest appearance on the show India's Got Latent.
