New Year 2026: India welcomed the New Year 2026 with much enthusiasm and grand celebrations across the country. From destination parties to house gatherings, Indians rang in the new year in their own unique ways. Extensive security arrangements were in place as revellers stepped out to mark the occasion and embrace new beginnings.

Tourist destinations across India came alive with festive crowds, vibrant city streets, and bustling pilgrimage centres. Travellers flocked to hill stations, coastal towns, and heritage sites to celebrate the arrival of 2026.

In Delhi, Connaught Place and Vasant Vihar witnessed a steady influx of revellers, as families and groups gathered in markets and open spaces ahead of the New Year.

The winter hills remained among the most sought-after destinations, with Manali, Shimla, and Mussoorie reporting heavy tourist traffic. Roads leading to Manali and the Kullu valley saw continuous movement as visitors arrived to enjoy the cold weather and scenic slopes.

In Shimla, large crowds gathered around the Ridge Ground, where hotels and cafes were packed with year-end travellers. Mussoorie also experienced a sharp rise in arrivals, with the town and surrounding areas divided into sectors to manage the festive rush.

On the eastern coast, Puri in Odisha saw thousands of devotees and visitors converge at the Shri Jagannath Temple. In Jammu and Kashmir, tourist hubs such as Lal Chowk in Srinagar and Katra, the base for the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, reported significant foot traffic.

In Mumbai, crowds gathered at popular waterfronts and promenades as revellers prepared to welcome the new year, even as the city maintained extensive on-ground deployment in high-footfall zones.

Gurugram in Haryana also saw increased activity around marketplaces and public areas, with authorities noting that many visitors from the National Capital Region had opted for suburban and nearby destinations to celebrate.

As the country ushered in the New Year, political and public figures took to social media to extend their best wishes to the citizens. The President, Chief Ministers, and various prominent personalities shared messages of peace, prosperity, and unity, reinforcing the spirit of renewal that comes with the New Year.

Leaders Extend New Year Wishes

- President Droupadi Murmu delivered a heartfelt message to the nation, reflecting on the promise and potential of the coming year. She wrote, "On the joyous occasion of New Year, I extend my heartiest greetings and best wishes to all Indians in the country and abroad. The New Year symbolises renewed energy and positive change. It is also an opportunity for self-reflection and fresh resolutions. On this occasion, let us further strengthen our commitment to the nation's development, social harmony, and environmental protection."

- LoP Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi extended his New Year greetings, saying, "As we step into 2026, I wish you all a year filled with joy, peace, and prosperity. May this new year bring new opportunities and success in every aspect of your life. Happy New Year to all!"

- Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta greeted people on New Year's Eve on Wednesday, saying that 2025 was a stage of preparation for her government, and that she would take all her initiatives further in the coming year. In a video message, Gupta said that 2025 brought new responsibilities, challenges, and opportunities for the government.

- In Jammu and Kashmir, both Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah sent their warm wishes to the region’s residents. They expressed hope for a year filled with peace, prosperity, and progress for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

In a message, LG Sinha said, "On the occasion of the New Year, I extend my greetings and best wishes to all the citizens. The New Year festivity brings new hopes and opportunities into our lives."

"May the New Year bring happiness to every household and inspire us to work together with dedication and mutual respect for the overall development and well-being of our society," Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said.

- Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also sent his heartfelt greetings to the people of the state, wishing them a year filled with peace and prosperity. He took the opportunity to highlight the state’s achievements in 2025, while expressing optimism for continued growth in the year ahead.

- Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also took part in the celebrations, extending his warm wishes to the citizens of the country on the eve of the New Year.
