Indian Navy News: The fourth and the fifth vessels in the series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Watercrafts (ASW SWC) being built by the Cochin Shipyard for the Indian Navy were concurrently launched at the ship-building facility on Monday. Upon commission into the Navy, the ships shall bear the names 'INS MALPE' and 'INS MULKI'.

INDIAN NAVY NEW ANTI-SUBMARINE SHIPS SPECIFICATIONS

- Length: 78 metres
- Width: 11.36 metres
- Draught: 2.7 metres
- Displacement: 900 tonnes
- Maximum Speed: 25 knots
- Endurance: 1,800 nauticle miles

The anti-submarine vessels have been designed to fit indigenously developed, state-of-the-art SONARS for underwater surveillance. The ship, belonging to the Mahe class, will replace the outgoing Abhay class ASW corvettes of the Indian Navy.

The Mahe class ships are designed to undertake anti-submarine operations, such as Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO) and Mine Laying Operations, including subsurface surveillance, in coastal waters.

After the ceremonial 'puja' at Cochin Shipyard, the vessels were launched by Vijaya Srinivas, the wife of Vice Admiral V Srinivas, the Flag Officer Commanding in Chief of the Southern Naval Command, who was the chief guest at the event. Top officials from Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), senior officers of Indian Navy, and representatives of the Classification Society were present on the occasion, which was described as "historic" by the CSL.
