DMK-AIADMK Alliance Rumours: Hours after TVK chief Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and staked a claim to form the government in the state, a shocking rumour broke out about talks between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), two arch Dravidian rivals, for the possibility of an alliance, aiming to block the actor-turned politicians from becoming chief minister.

CNN-News18, quoting sources, reported that there was buzz in Chennai over a possible alliance between the DMK and AIADMK. However, there was no official comment from either party about the drastic shift in their political stance.

Do Numbers Support Even If AIADMK And DMK Come Together?

The DMK won 59 seats and the AIADMK 47 in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly in the recently held elections. If they come together, the number would stand: 106, still short of the majority mark of 118 to form the government. Which means even in this scenario, TVK has an advantage with 108 seats.

In past, Indian democracy witnessed such unbelievable tie-ups between political enemies. Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD and Nitish Kumar's JD-U came together to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2015 Bihar polls. Similarly, the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samajwadi Party stunned everyone by joining hands to defeat the saffron party in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. However, such an opportunist alliance did not last for long. Currently, almost all such unnatural alliances have collapsed.

Small Gainers Emerge As King-Maker

In the current scenario, the TVK-Congress still needs five more MLAs' support to form a government. Small parties have not shown their cards officially. All eyes are on PMK 4, IUML 2, CPI 2, VCK 2, CPI-M 2, BJP-1, DMDK-1 and AMMK-1.

Could DMK And AIADMK Form An Alliance?

At first glance, it is unlikely, but past experiences suggest that in Indian democracy, anything can happen. In Tamil Nadu, Congress began by ditching decades-old allies, DMK. Historically, the origin of both parties - DMK and AIADMK - is the same: the Dravidian movement led by EV Ramasamy (Periyar). The AIADMK split from the DMK after MG Ramachandran (MGR), the iconic Tamil actor and politician, left the party over his differences with then-Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. He founded AIADMK in 1972. Since the two parties dominate the state polity. In the absence of DMK's Karunanidhi and AIADMK's J Jayalalithaa, both parties are being run by next-gen leadership. In the coming days, it will be clear whether the two opponents come together to deal with the Vijay factor.
