The "Digital Safety for Senior Citizens: Sach Ke Saathi" campaign was launched at Ashok Vihar, Delhi, under Google’s flagship DigiKavach initiative, in collaboration with Jagran New Media and Vishvas News. The campaign aims to safeguard senior citizens from online fraud and scams while spreading awareness about preventive measures and the importance of digital safety in society.
At the event held at the Ashok Vihar Community Centre, trainers from Vishvas News highlighted how cybercriminals and online scammers increasingly target senior citizens, with such cases rising rapidly. Participants were made aware of different types of online fraud and educated on effective ways to protect themselves.
During the training, experts explained various scams, such as phishing, investment fraud, festive season scams, and job scams, and how cybercriminals trap victims. They cautioned that fraudsters often send phishing links with lucrative offers during festivals, advising participants that the safest way to avoid such threats is to never click on suspicious links.
Attendees were also introduced to the importance of Google Password Manager and guided on creating strong passwords. Trainers explained that Google Passkeys are a safer and simpler alternative to passwords, allowing logins through fingerprint, face scan, or screen lock, thereby enhancing account security.
Opening the program, Rajesh Upadhyay, Editor-in-Chief of Jagran New Media, spoke about the rising threat of cybercrime and detailed Google’s DigiKavach initiative and its objectives. Snehil Thorat, a member of the Google team, emphasised that DigiKavach is a key initiative by Google towards strengthening digital safety.
Urvashi Kapoor, Senior Editor at Vishvas News, shared practical digital safety tips and best practices to help people stay safe online and avoid potential scams.
Devika Mehta, Deputy Editor at Vishvas News, shed light on AI-driven frauds. She explained how cybercriminals now use AI-generated deepfake videos of celebrities, urging investments, and tricking people into scams.
The event also saw the participation of Ashok Goel, MLA of Model Town, as the chief guest. He lauded the joint initiative by Dainik Jagran and Google, calling it "the need of the hour," and shared his personal experiences on digital safety. Participants also came forward to share their own bitter experiences of falling victim to cybercrimes, making the session highly interactive and insightful.
